Dan Plonsey: Bird-Constructions & Musics

The Bird-Constructions ensemble is sextet of saxophones/little percussion/little winds/little strings, which features:

(Jonas, McKean and Plonsey are 3/4 of the Great Circle Saxophone Quartet.)

Dan Plonsey is well known in the Bay Area for leading the large ensemble, Daniel Popsicle, the theatrical-music company Disaster Opera Theatre, the quintet/trio known as The Manufacturing of Humidifiers, and for playing in groups led by many of the area's finest jazz and creative musicians, including Ben Goldberg, John Schott, Graham Connah and Ron Thompson. Plonsey's compositions have been commissioned by Bang on a Can, the Berkeley Symphony, and Santa Cruz New Music Works. His list of recordings includes: Ivory Bill (Music & Arts), Open Door And Desire (Newtone), Another Curiosity Piece (Omnisonic), and, with the Great Circle Saxophone Quartet, Child King Dictator Fool (New World). Plonsey is responsible for founding and booking the Beanbender's Creative Music Series, which was weekly from 1995--1999, and continues on an occasional basis.

As much an art performance as a concert, the Bird-Constructions ensemble play Plonsey's compositions and also improvises, while simultaneously building and painting its own enclosure.

The itinerary for the Bird-Constructions & Musics tour is as follows. All shows are as described above, except for February 24, in which the ensemble participates in a performance piece by Molly Sturges and Chris Jonas.
