Jazz and Creative Music mailing lists
For the un-initiated, mailing lists fall into a couple main categories:
- Calendar type, where you subscribe and occasionally get e-mail
announcing events
- listserv type, where music is discussed by everyone
sending e-mail to the listserv,
which then forwards it to everyone on the list (either automatically, or
with a "moderator" who chooses what gets passed along)
To sign onto our e-mail mailing list
(you'll receive monthly notification of
our shows and very occasional information about special events),
or for more information about
Beanbender's, send me e-mail right here and now:
dan@plonsey.com.
We now have two Bay Area regional mailing lists for discussion of
local creative music / improvisation:
ba-newmus,
which covers improvisation, new music, and whatever; and also
ba-improv, which
covers the same subjects, but as part of a national set of "-improv"
lists.
In this set, you may find the following regional lists (more in development):
- SF Bay Area: ba-improv
- Chicago: chi-improv
- Boston: boss-improv
- Philadelphia/Baltimore: phiba-improv
- Michigan: mich-improv
- SouthEast US: se-improv
- Rocky Mountain states: rockies-improv
- Pacific Northwest: pnw-improv
To subscribe to any of these lists, send email to majordomo@wnur.nwu.edu
with a message body of:
subscribe list-name
(listname = chi-improv, etc)
There is also a
euro free improv
mailing list."
Here is a comprehensive list of
mailing lists (including Sun Ra, Miles, Coltrane, jazz, etc.).
Radio Stations
- Livingroom Radio, internet
broadcast of creative music. Also links to other stations.
- KZSU radio, Stanford 90.1FM.
Supporters of a wide range of creative music, generally the best station in the
Bay Area for creative music. They also have the "Day of Noise" once a year,
so stay tuned! An extensive web-site.
- WFMU radio station ditto, plus a catalog
assortment of the Unusual and Profound.
- WREK - Georgia Tech.
- WNUR - a truly vast list
of jazz and creative musicians; many bios and discographies and images.
- KFJC, Los Altos Hills. 89.7FM.
Foothill College radio station, located between San Francisco and Palo Alto,
one of the Bay Area's best stations for creative music - and friendly, competent staff!
- KALX, Berkeley. 90.7FM
University of California at Berkeley student radio station.
By national standards, KALX is pretty decent college radio; I listen to 'em a fair amount.
But just try to schedule an interview with these bozos!
- KUSF, San Francisco. 90.3FM.
Similar in many respects to KALX.
- Prem Lall,6-9AM, Monday,
"Genre Oblivious" music.
- KPFA, Berkeley. 94.1FM.
Pacifica's Berkeley radio station. They program a mix of world music, creative music,
and lots of political shows with a left/radical perspective. Lately they've generated
controversy by firing older programmers with extensive knowledge of roots music
and the avant garde, and replaced them with a young crew seemingly chosen to appeal to
a less sophisticated (and hence, presumably, larger) audience.
But they've still got a number of excellent programmers.
KPFA has its own organized opposition:
Take Back KPFA.
- Jazz Profiles schedule, on NPR.
Creative Music Journals, Zines, e-Zines, Books
- Cadence Magazine
The most comprehensive journal of creative music worldwide.
- The Improvisor
Published infrequently, this is an indispensable resource for interviews, reviews
and essays by and about some of the most dedicated practitioners of free improv.
- The Wire. Creative
music in many manifestations, including improv, electronica, classical. Much
less genre-bound than Cadence and Coda.
- Coda Magazine: one of the
longest-running jazz & creative music publications.
- One Final Note: online journal w/ reviews of
CDS & concerts and other creative writing
- sOuNDz IMPOSSIBLE: an excellent
online journal of improvised and experimental musics. Lots of interviews.
- pfMENTUM: a small but very
thoughtful journal; usually one interview and a couple essays. Allied with the
Ventura (California) New Music Concert Series.
- Signal to Noise: An international
journal of improvised and experimental music (with a little Vermont news too), reviews
of CDS, and interviews
with major musicians, and best, a regular column by Eugene Chadbourne!
- OUTSIDE - a monthly
zine primarily devoted to free jazz and creative music in the SF Bay Area. Includes a
calendar of the month's events.
Edited by Jim Ryan: Subscriptions $5 for 10-12 issues (one year).
OUTSIDE,

The best source for recorded jazz and creative music. Also the most comprehensive journal of
creative music worldwide. Unfortunately, however, limited to the

mail order spot for obscure and creative music.
- Forced Exposure, another
great mail order
source for creative music not limited to the jazz family.
- GAIA Music Mart site
