Drummer Curt Newton studied with Bob Gullotti and holds a Masters in Jazz Performance from New England Conservatory. Curt has drummed with Debris for over five years. His work with guitarist Joe Morris can be heard on the new Soul Note CD Symbolic Gesture, as well as on Live From The Knitting Factory Vol 5. Curt also plays regularly with Chicago-based reedist Ken Vandermark, including recent performances and recording as the trio Steel Wool. He has also performed with Mandala Octet, Alan Dawson and Bob Gullotti, and an evolving series of improvising groups like Cheap Suit and Antenna Quartet.
Steve Norton leads the Boston-based new music quintet Debris, whose debut CD, Terre Haute, was released on Rastascan Records in 1993. Steve is the co-producer of Jump or Die (21 Anthony Braxton Compositions 1992), a collaboration between Debris and San Francisco's Splatter Trio released this spring on the Music and Arts label. He has played baritone sax for the saxophone quartet Sponj since 1992, and was a founding member of the Either/Orchestra, contributing to their first and second recordings. Steve is also currently a member of Joe Morris' Racket Club, whose album Rumblestrip is due on the About Time label in September. Steve has also performed with Herb Robertson, Ken Vandermark, Tim Berne, Jack Wright, Gregg Bendian, Andrea Parkins and many players in Boston's vital improvised music community including Tom Plsek, John Voigt, Laurence Cook and Dave Peck. Steve studied saxphone with Steve Adams of ROVA and George Garzone, and composition at Berklee College of Music.
